Staycation, international vacation or domestic vacation? Mission trip in the US or overseas? Wondering what to do on your next vacation? Think about staying “closer” to home. Pack up your car and head across the USA; it can be just as beautiful and exciting as traveling overseas, and you don’t need a passport, immunization shots or currency exchange.

My husband and I recently relocated from the west coast to the east coast. Here are some quick highlights from our recent trek. We began in Auburn, California and finished in Bangor, Maine. We visited ghost towns [Nevada], Arches National Monument [Utah], Crested Butte and the Continental Divide [Colorado], John Wayne’s birthplace and the Bridges of Madison County [Iowa], Downtown Omaha [Nebraska], Rise and Roll Bakery [Indiana], Lake Erie, Niagara Falls and Lake Placid [New York], Lake Champlain [Vermont], and the Lion and Rose B&B [New Hampshire].

My husband and I chose to take I-80 from California to New York. We then veered north through the Adirondack Mountains, Northern Vermont and New Hampshire’s White Mountains, arriving in our new home state [Maine]. We saw a wide variety of terrain including desolate desert in Nevada, steep rugged mountains in Colorado, long, boring stretches of farm land through Nebraska and Iowa, and beautiful rolling green hills in the northern New England.

Our great country is filled with wonderful sites and great attractions. If money is tight or you don’t want to fly 18 hours, think about staying “closer” to home. Make an effort to appreciate the country you live in. There is a reason why people from all across the world vacation here. It is truly beautiful from sea to shining sea. There are tons of actual mission trips in the US and you can make a mission trip out of any road trip too.
